Easy Homemade Apple Cider From Scratch
This delicious homemade apple cider is incredibly easy to make. Warm, comforting, with just the right amount of spice and sweetness. Enjoy both warm or cold and make it extra fun by adding a dash of rum or whisky, and dollop of fresh whipped cream.
Note: Instead of discarding the solids after straining, you can blend them up to make a simple apple sauce! Just be sure to remove any cinnamon sticks and orange peels beforehand.
How Long Does It Take To Make Apple Cider?
Creating easy homemade apple cider takes 3 hours to make. And while that may seem time-consuming, most of the 3-hour duration involves letting the apples simmer on the stove. It’s a low-maintenance recipe; just stir occasionally. You’ll love the delightful, natural aroma from the simmering apples that makes your home smell like heaven for hours, way better than any scented candle and completely natural too.
From Scratch Apple Cider Ingredients
- 6 large apples, quartered (remove the core, keep skin)
- 2 oranges, sliced (optional)
- Water, enough to cover apples in pot
- 1/4 cup brown sugar (or more to taste)
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice (or all spice or apple pie spice)
How To Make Apple Cider From Scratch
- Place apples (and optional oranges) in a large pot and cover with water by at least 2 inches. Stir in sugar, cinnamon, and spices.
- Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Boil, uncovered, for 1 hour. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer for 2 hours.
- Strain through a cheesecloth lined colander and discard the solids.
- Serve warm or refrigerate cider until cold.
