How To Make: DIY Christmas Simmer Pot
This simmer pot is super simple and easy to make. Just put your favourite ingredients in a pot over the stove, cover with water and let it simmer away. This is an easy natural way to make your house smell like the holidays. Experiment with all the different ingredients you can use to see what smells you like best. Here’s a few suggestions to get you started:
- Oranges
- Lemons
- Apple
- Cranberries
- Cinnamon Sticks
- Evergreen Branches
- Rosemary
- Star Anise
- Cloves
If you want to give this simmer pot as a gift that can be made later, then be sure to dry your fruit first (check out the quick tutorial below on how to do this).

How To Use DIY Christmas Simmer Pot
Pour the simmer pot ingredients into a pot on the stove. Cover with water, and bring to a boil. Then, lower the heat and let it simmer all day long. Remember to check it frequently and add more water if needed. For obvious safety reasons, never leave the pot unattended. When you’re done for the day, put everything in the fridge. You can re-use the same ingredients a few more times.
How To Dry Orange Slices In The Oven (Without A Dehydrator)
Drying your orange slices at home in the oven is very easy to do. Just follow these simple steps:
- First, slice the oranges evenly (a mandolin is helpful if you have one on hand).
- Place them on a parchment-lined baking tray. Make sure orange slices are not overlapping, otherwise they won’t dry evenly.
- Pat each slice with paper towels to soak up as much extra juice as possible.
- Bake at 200F for 4 hours, flipping halfway.
- Some slices might dry faster; remove these and bake the rest for another 30-60 minutes, watching to avoid burning.
- You know they’re done when they are dry to touch, but still orange in colour. They’ll also dry a little more at room temperature afterwards.

How To Make These Easy Simmer Pot Gift Jars
This is the easiest homemade festive gift and will be loved by anyone! To make, simply fill an airtight glass jar (I used these mason jars) with all of the dried fruit and other goodies you desire.
I filled mine with a few small dried orange slices, a couple sticks of cinnamon, dried cranberries, evergreen branches (freshly cut from our tree in the backyard), star anise and clove spice. Close tightly and add a ribbon if you choose for some extra holiday fun.
